Interactive Study of different types of Network Server.
Before telling the theory. we are placing a human analogy to perceive the subject matter. We all belong to some of the family, where there is a master of each family. He or She may be the father or mother to whom we ask for everything. He or She manages everything as require. We need to listen the story of 'Jack & John'. Jack asked his father, "Dad! I need a crayon box for my drawing competition that is scheduled on tomorrow." Mr. John mildly told, " Ok. I see." He put his phone and called," Robin! Do You have stock of Crayon box. Ok Send a piece within today evening." Jack returned from his school, he found his crayon box kept in his study table.
This is a simple illustration of network server & client. Here 'Jack' may be represented as client. He can only send the request to his father. He can be represented as server that can manage everything to fulfill the request of the clients as 'jack.' On the other hand 'Robin' is analogous to another network server which can serve the request of another server attached to network.
So from the above analogy perhaps it is clear about the function of Computer Server and it's working. Server is the key element in a computer network. It provides different resources. It stores all the necessary data. It transmits data series to the subordinate client computers. When a client requires functionality from a server, it sends request to the assigned server that receives this request. Accordingly it responds to the request with appropriate information. This is called call & response model of client-server network.
As complexity of the networking, there are different types of server as per the functionality over the network. These are File Server, Print Server, Application Server, DNS Server, Mail server, Data Base Server, Proxy Server & DHCP Server. Brief functionality of these servers are discussed as follows.
File Server: In any organization there are many more files and folders. All these files are frequently handled by multiple user in that organization. So all these files are needed to store in a safe & secure place to avoid missing or mishandled. So all the files are stored in a dedicated File Server.
Print Server: As per functionality of any organization, there are different types & sizes printers. These printers are not all times engaged. So to maximize the utilization. a print server is used in the network to manage and distribute the printing functionality. Thus a single printer via network can be used by multiple clients or users.
Application Server: Some program or application is installed centrally and can be operated from client computers. The data is receipt, processed and stored in this application server. There are several application server such as Mail server, DNS server and Database server.
Mail Server: It manages receiving. storing and delivery of the mail of a client or user.
Web Server: This is a special kind of application server. It hosts programs or data in the internet or intranet.
DNS or Domain Name System Server: This is one kind of application server that resolves every domain name to dedicated internet protocol address individually.
Database Server: Some companies or organizations run some application or program having several databases. It requires huge disk space at the client or user end. So the central database is managed and maintained by the central database server.
Proxy Server: It is an intermediary server which connects a server or client to other server or client just like a pseudo connector. It is used for security purposes. It receives request and passes to the original server, collects response & passes to the client as it responds on its own.
DHCP Server: This is abbreviated for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, a network management server that assigns dynamic IP addresses.
